In Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novel Thud, one of the characters asks the protagonist, Commander of the City Watch, Sir Samuel Vimes, “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

This roughly translates as “Who watches the watchmen?”

Sir Samuel’s answer is simple yet profound: “We all keep an eye on each other.“

In this age of AI assisted software development, the most important elements — proper planning, testing, and security — are even more critical to success. The coding part was always the easy bit, making it robust, secure, performant, accessible, while meeting the business requirements, was the hard part.

And that will always require the human element, if nothing else than to make sure the hard bits are done as thoroughly as the easy ones.
